Maltesers photo exhibition about the “Righteous Among the Nations” has got high appraisal by the highest Lithuanian officials and wide coverage of national media

President of the Republic of Lithuania H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė and Ambassador of the Order of Malta H.E. Manfred Ritter Mautner von Markhof last week officially opened photo exhibition, dedicated to the “Righteous Among the Nations” – people, who saved the Jews during the Second World War.

“Second World War not only brought a lot of disasters, but also showed us those, who demonstrated extraordinary courage and self-sacrifice in saving other people’s lives, – said the Ambassador during the opening ceremony. -Every year the number of Righteous Among the Nations becomes less and less, so it is important for us to commemorate their faces and hear their stories…”

“In the tragic history of the Holocaust we see a bright ray of light – thousands of Jewish saviors in Lithuania,” said President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė in her speech. – “They were risking their own and their relatives’ lives and in this way embodied the very true humanity and courage during these terrible days. We will never forget the names of the Righteous Among the Nations. I am delighted that this project is so successful. We have managed to draw the attention of Lithuanian society to the Righteous Among the Nations and provide them necessary help and assistance.”

The Malteser Righteous Among the Nations Project was initiated by the former Order’s Ambassador to Lithuania Baron Christian von Bechtolsheim. He organized charity concert in his hometown Munich on November 2, 2015.

President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite and President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck became the patrons of the concert. The concert had a great success, 123 723 € donations were collected there.

These funds were used for the special project, which was carried out by the maltesers together with the Lithuanian Jewish community. BENU Pharmacies debit cards to buy medicine were given to “Righteous Among the Nations”; every month a fixed sum of money was transferred there. In addition, individual social needs and resources available to finance were assessed for each “Lithuanian Righteous Among the Nations”. Photo exhibition is a part of the project as well. Maltesers visited many “Righteous Among the Nations”, made photos and recorded their stories.
